Cuba hosts 105th inter-parliamentary conference in April

Around 1,500 legislators from all over the world will participate in the 105th Parliamentary Union Conference to be held in Havana from the 1st to the 7th of April. The event was made public on December 27th by the president of the International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People's Power (Cuban parliament), Ramσn Pez Ferro. The Parliamentary Union (IU), founded in 1889, is the world's first multilateral institution, and deals with political issues of global interest. At present, the IU is constituted by the legislative organs of over 140 countries, as well as regional entities such as the Andean, Pan-Latin, Central American, and European Parliaments.
Pez Ferro states that the 105th IU Conference will focus mainly on the preservation of international law for the sake of peace and security in the world and on education and culture as essential factors to promoting political activity in society. The IU works mainly on strengthening relations between parliaments, unifying action toward their consolidation, and promoting world peace .

Close to 800 US students meet Castro

On December 20th, Havana's Palacio de Convenciones held an encounter between Cuban president Fidel Castro and 772 US students integrating the University Explorer project. The project consists of a semester of studies aboard a cruise ship that takes students to 10 ports in different continents. Issues discussed during the event included the future of relations between the US and Cuba, the current global economic situation, and even Castro's favorite color (red). The Cuban president declared that "The future will belong to optimists. It will depend on how many optimists there are in the US and here.", and that "It doesn't only depend on you or on us, it also depends on others who are not present here today". On a potential normalization of relations to the US, Castro stated that Cuba does not fear losing control of its destiny .
